Vanity Fair July 1916

With her jet-black hair and diaphanous scarf streaming out behind her, a woman in a flamboyantly patterned black dress strides along the beach. She plucks seagulls from a rosy evening sky and adds them to a feathered birdcage. Rita Senger's quirky illustration appeared on the July 1916 cover.

Owen Davis Jr.

Florence Vandamm's photograph of Owen Davis Jr., handsome and confident with one hand placed casually in his pocket, ran in the October 1930 Vanity Fair.

  Marion Davies

Marion Davies made her feature film debut in 1917's Runaway, Romany, which she also wrote. This close-up, by Irving Chidnoff, is from the January 1928 Vanity Fair.
