Cecil Beaton's studio image of the unfailingly elegant Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, wearing a floral, strapless Christian Dior dress with a diamond collar appeared in the March 1, 1951, Vogue. The Duchess was a familiar subject to Beaton; he had photographed her as well as Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, several times previously. The Duchess is noted as being Time magazine's first 'Woman of the Year' in 1936.
