Barbara Smaller was born and raised outside of Chicago, where she honed her artistry while following a long string of career paths, including nursing school, a job as a night guard at the Art Institute of Chicago, and stand-up comedy. Her first cartoon was published in The New Yorker in 1996. Smaller currently lives in New York with her husband and daughter, and often incorporates into her drawings what she sees, hears, and experiences living in the heart of the city.
