In this idyllic scene, appearing on the April 1994 Gourmet cover, lush, orderly rows of lavender plants in full bloom stretch back toward a horizon obscured by dense green foliage, while the spreading branches of a dark-wooded tree give further shade. Photographer Julian Nieman captured this image in a lavender garden in Provence, where the soothing herb is native to the region.
